Job Search

First of all, let me say that the flu SUCKS!!!  Every person in my family has come down with it over the past two weeks – I got the lightest case which was good for me but since I was the “least sick” person in the house I had to take care of everyone else!  For the most part, we are all over it…my husband is still very tired  (which is SO unlike him) but I think it will just take a few more days before he is back to normal.

On the work front, things are going great.  In spite of my long commute, I do enjoy my job.  Right now, it is still a contract position but I really don’t mind it because I get paid by the hour which makes me eligible for overtime.  My boss has already talked to me about applying for the job (there are two open positions in the department) and I have put in my application but like anything at a large company, things move at the slowest pace possible…not that I mind since I am making good money with the overtime!

On the knitting front, I have been busy.  I am going to be teaching a toe-up sock class at my LYS next month and I knit up a sample sock for her to display in the store.

Garter Rib Sock

This is a basic garter rib pattern with a gusset heel – very easy for teaching.  You might recognize the yarn from The Great Jitterbug Caper.  Karen, at my LYS decided that I should just use one of the dye lots from the original skein to make this sample sock since it won’t ever have a mate and I will use the other for my “teaching” sock…a smart way to deal with a mis-matched skein.

I had also been feeling the need to knit a sweater for myself when I got the Spring 2008 Interweave Knits.  There are a lot of great sweaters in it (and many in my size) and after much thought I decided to cast on for Printed Silk Cardigan.  Instead of the La Luz yarn recommended in the pattern, I am using Rowan Calmer in the Blush colorway.

 Calmer

I had originally bought it to make Morrigan, but I know that it will be a long time before I tackle that one so I put it to another use.  So far, I have finished the back and am almost finished with the left front – I will try to take some pictures tonight so I can show you tomorrow.

Why do people feel that it is ok to jerk you around?

I have been searching for a job and recently an opportunity kind of fell into my lap.  I went in and interviewed with the President of the company – I was very honest about what I was looking for and my salary requirements and the interview went really well (which is a HUGE thing for me because I have an anxiety disorder that makes interviewing very difficult).  It went so well that I received a call that afternoon to schedule a second interview with the person who would be my direct manager…I was a more nervous about this one because she has a reputation for being difficult, but when I met with her it couldn’t have been better.  We really got along great (had the same sense of humor, same work ethic, etc) and when I left she indicated that she was going to recommend that they hire me.  Her only concern was that this is a small company and there could be some issues relating to my salary requirements (which I had indicated were flexible).

Then, on Friday, I got a call from the President of the company asking me to come in this morning to talk about the job some more.  He said that he wanted to ”run a few ideas by me” relating to the job.  I thought about it all weekend and figured that he would most likely offer me the job but at a reduced salary – not something I was thrilled about but depending on the salary, it was probably do-able.

ANYWAY, I go in this morning and he tells me that given my salary requirements and the state of the economy he is worried that if he hires me he might have to eventually lay me off if he loses any of his larger customers so he has decided not to offer me the job!  He also wants me to periodically “keep in touch” just in case his customer base (or the economy) changes because then he would definately want to hire me.

ARGGGGGG!!!  He made me come into the office to tell me this?  He couldn’t just say it over the phone?  I just don’t understand why he wasted my time to come in for 2 extra meetings when he had no intention of hiring me!  I am really bummed about this because it would have been a great job – short commute, casual atmosphere, small family-oriented company.

I guess it’s off to send out some more resumes…
